The NHL is celebrating women in hockey, and every week through April, NHL.com will highlight a woman from each of the 32 teams. Today, a look at Arizona Coyotes president of the Arizona Kachina Girls Hockey Association, and radio color analyst Lyndsey Fry:
Title: President, Arizona Kachinas Girls Hockey Association & radio color analyst
Education: Bachelor (History of Science), Harvard; MBA, Arizona State University
Describe your job in 2-3 sentences:
As the president of the girls program operated by the NHL Club, I lead all on ice and off-ice operations as well as set the strategy for growth and long term sustainability. As radio color analyst, I call about 60-65 Coyotes games during the year and often jump into a TV analyst role during the pregame and postgame show.
What was the first career you dreamed of having as a kid?
I really wanted to be a Disney Imagineer and build rides for Disneyland! I actually started college as a mechanical engineering major because of it. I used to build massive foam models of all these rides and dreamed of creating one day.
What's the best piece of career advice you've ever been given, or what advice do you like to give others?
A career advisor during my MBA program sat me down one day and drew 4 circles. They said: 1. Do what you love; 2. be an expert in what you do; 3. Do something you can get paid to do
He said the key to happiness was finding a job that would fit all three. This was so important for me because at the time I was really shying away from a career in hockey because I felt like I "should be" getting out of my comfort zone. But when I saw those 3 circles, I realized that this is exactly where I belong.
What motivates you to keep pushing and be successful?
I think having been a girl/woman in a male dominant field my whole life, I've always striven to break barriers wherever possible. There is still so much for women to achieve in hockey and being part of that push to make things more equitable for the next generation of girls is what keeps me going!
Are you a morning person or night owl?
It really depends on the week. Sometimes I love waking up early and knocking out a workout, other times I love staying up late by myself and just letting my creative juices flow into various projects.
Right now it's probably "Ride of a Lifetime" by Bob Iger
What's your favorite movie or TV show?
TV show is "Schitt's Creek." Movie is tough but I think a classic go to is "The Sound of Music."
What is your most-used emoji?
Haha the one with the clenched teeth
Do you have any hidden talents (if yes, what)?
I can sing and have written a number of songs
